When planning home improvements — whether it's a new roof, rendering, painting, or installing solar panels - one question often comes up:

"Do I need scaffolding for that?"

At DC Scaffolding, we get asked this a lot. So here's a simple guide to help you understand when scaffolding is required, when it's recommended, and why it matters.

🔍 When Is Scaffolding a Legal Requirement?

In the UK, scaffolding is required when work at height can't be done safely using ladders or other equipment. In the UK, scaffolding is required when work at height can't be done safely using ladders or other equipment.

Jobs that typically require scaffolding:

  • Roof replacements or chimney repairs

  • Solar panel installation

  • Exterior rendering or repointing

  • Loft conversions or dormer installations

  • Gutter or fascia work on tall buildings

If the job involves working several meters above the ground or over fragile surfaces (like glass or conservatories), scaffolding is the safest and most compliant option.

👍🏼 When Scaffolding Is Highly Recommended

Even if it's not legally required, scaffolding can:

  • Make the job quicker and more efficient

  • Protect your property from damage (e.g. ladders banging into walls)

  • Keep workers safer and more comfortable

  • Make it easier to store tools and materials up high

For example, painting or replacing windows on a two-storey home may not need scaffolding by law, but most tradespeople will ask for it — and for good reason.

💡 Can't They Just Use a Ladder?

Sometimes yes. But ladders are only suitable for short, simple tasks that don't require carrying heavy tools or working for long periods. A tradesperson working on your roof for 2-3 days needs more than just a ladder.

🛠️ What Happens If I Don't Provide Scaffolding?

If a contractor deems a job unsafe without proper access, they can:

  • Refuse to do the job

  • Delay the work until access is sorted

  • Or increase the price to account for extra difficulty or risk

Providing safe scaffolding helps avoid delays, extra costs, or accidents.
